In the spring of 2004, six women of Roosevelt University had a vision to begin a multicultural sorority. Some of us had experienced several established sororities and talked to some of the members to consider pledging. For the most part we were all disappointed in our interactions while doing research on other Greeks and the lack of a true feeling of sisterhood from them. We were questioning whether to follow the crowd and pledge with little enthusiasm or to consider alternatives.
With this spirit, the legend of Gamma Theta Chi was born. We were excited but never anticipated the hard work involved. We knew for sure this would truly be a sorority that prohibited hazing and encouraged a true connection of sisterhood that would last.
Over the next four years, many challenges and accomplishments would arise. In 2007, the sorority earned its Articles of Incorporation in the State of Illinois. In addition, the sorority would be honored by Roosevelt University for its innovative approach to the “no hazing” concept and mission of social justice in our efforts to promote multiculturalism. Our relationship with other Chicago land non for profits increased as we constantly learned new ways to help our organization grow. During the first two years of existence, three of our founding mothers received special achievement awards recognized by the student body of RU including the “Woman of Influence Award” and the “Bronze R” awards, achievements given through the Office of Student Activities and the President of the University.
Throughout the history of GT-Chi, there were influences who did not wish to see our organization succeed. These influences came from outside parties and sadly within our organization, however adversity has only strengthened this sisterhood. Fortunately, the women who remained within, shared a commitment to learn how to be a sisterhood that respects and shows a genuine concern about each other. This is not just a Greek organization, this is a family.
Only the strongest of women wear the azalea pink and black colors and are chosen legacies. We welcome you to explore joining our sisterhood!
